The problem

Registers hold too much cash, which raises theft and robbery risk.

Steps

1. Set a drawer cap, such as a fixed dollar amount over the starting bank
2. Drop excess cash to the safe when the cap is hit
3. Use a drop log with time, amount, and two initials
4. Never count drops on the sales floor
5. Reconcile drops at close
